The official name of the country in both the official language Romanian and in English is Moldova. It derives from the river Moldova (in German: Moldau), even though the current territory of the country is no longer touched by this river. The official name in Germany and Austria is Republic of Moldova, and in Switzerland it is Republic of Moldova. In German-speaking countries, the country is also often referred to unofficially as Moldawien.

The Republic of Moldova is a parliamentary republic led by President Maia Sandu. The country has a population of approximately 2.4 million and its own currency, the Moldovan leu (MDL).
